Grand Opening of Activities Center at Bethany Health Care Center

cutting ribbonThe benevolence of benefactors has enabled Bethany to undertake its first major construction in over 50 years. The vision of an Activity Center for residents became a reality during the grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 4, 2018. Karyn Polito, Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts, who was present for the ceremony commented that this is, “a moment of sheer joy. You have created a first class room for all to enjoy and call home.” She then thanked Jacquelyn McCarthy, CSJ, and Rosemary Brennan, CSJ, for “loving and giving and caring so much.”

CSJ Boston Associate Commitment 2018

Based on Welcome Reflections by Maureen Doherty, CSJ

For years now, May 1 has marked the occasion when our Associates renew their commitments, and new Associates make an initial commitment to become part of our Family of Joseph.

This year we have 62 Boston Associates renewing their commitment! We also are blessed with an additional 42 Associates in New Mexico who will renew their commitment in September. Actually, I look upon tonight’s celebration as an excellent opportunity for all of us, associates and professed sisters, to commit to continue our journey together – a journey to spiritual deepening and service to God and the “dear neighbor” without distinction.

However, in all reality, this evening is a special celebration for two women who have chosen to embrace the mission and charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston. For the past two years, Julia Passanisi and Janice Young, accompanied on their journey by their mentors, Sarah Barrett, CSJA, Joan Duffy, CSJ, Kathleen Hagerty, CSJ, and Judy Swett, CSJA, have attended Congregation and Associate gatherings, shared prayer with us, and lived our charism in their various ministries.

In reading the letters Julia and Janice wrote requesting to make their commitment this evening, it was obvious to me that “They’re ready!” They wrote: ” I am so thrilled to have discovered that the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph, unity, reconciliation, and inclusive love of the ‘dear neighbor’ without distinction, is the same call and response that I have held deeply in my own heart.”…. or…”I have learned that prayer and quiet time are necessary parts of my daily routine. These give me strength to assist those in need.” Comments such as these indicate that, “They get it!”

So, thank you, Julia and Janice for trusting us enough to share your gifts with us…as together we continue to strive to be a visible sign of God’s inclusive love in our world.
